Description:
On my trip to Kauai we visited the lighthouse in Kilauea.  As I stood outside the lighthouse I noticed some white rocks shining in the sunshine.  I leaned down to pick one up and I heard in my mind that the rocks didn’t belong there!  They were brought in when they built the road. The feeling I got from the information was that the island wasn’t happy that outside rocks had been brought to the island.  As I thought about that I got the feeling that the island was asking me to tell the story.  While pondering how best to do that I looked down and there were two native rocks at my feet.  I heard in my mind that if I promised to tell the story of the rocks that had invaded the island I could take the native rocks to use in my artwork.
I had three different occasions when the island let me take native rocks home.  All three times were different but each time the theme was invasion.  The island isn’t happy. The land kept telling me to tell the stories so that others could understand that there is responsibility for outsiders and native islanders to respect the land.  In the Kilauea Lighthouse painting the invading rock is the one in the lighthouse.  The native rocks are happily part of the landscape.
