“Your neck is like the tower of David, built with course of stone; on it hang a thousand shields, all of them shields of warriors.”
Song of Solomon 4:4
The Tower of David, also known as the Citadel of Jerusalem, is the highest landmark in the Old City and, ironically, has nothing to do with King David. It was mistakenly miss-named early in its history. This remarkable structure began with Hasmonean kings in the 2nd century B.C., and covers 5,000 years of history. Today it is a walkthrough museum that bore witness to most of Jerusalem’s history.
The site was chosen for its topography, the highest point on the southwestern edge of most vulnerable part of the city. Over thousands of years it was improved by early kings of Israel, Romans, Crusaders, Muslims, and Turks.
Today there are no more military actions at the Tower of David. Events and concerts augment the museum’s educational exhibits which are located in a series of air conditioned rooms that depict various stages of Israel’s history from the Canaanites to the Turks. In the summer evenings, lights and sounds retell the story of the Citadel of Jerusalem during the Night Spectacular show, with giant virtual reality images splashed on the walls. The multi-sensory event uses a sophisticated computer system that King David would heartily approve of in his namesake fortress. Day or night The Tower of David is the most unique museum in Jerusalem.
Stones
The main stone in this piece of artwork was collected by a Jewish friend of mine. She collected it years ago when she lived in Israel and has had it in her back garden in the Netherlands until she sent it to me. I love the connection we have. She sent me a stone that fit into the top of a tower I was making here in San Diego without knowing what I needed or what I was creating. That happens often with us. The stone was no accident. I surrounded the Tower of David stone with amber stones and with a stone from the Jaffa Gate that my friend also sent me from her recent trip to Jerusalem.
Amber
On the side of The Tower of David stone I placed Amber stones. Amber brings good luck to warriors. It cleanses the environment as well as the body, mind and spirit. It has a soothing energy that helps calm nerves. Amber helps one manifest their desires, and it stimulates our intellect.
Jaffa Gate Stone
On top of the Tower of David stone is a small stone from the Jaffe Gate in Old Town Jerusalem. It was one of 7 gates used to enter the Old City. As you enter the gate The Tower of David is on your right. There are 300 references to the Jaffa Gate in the scriptures however the walls and gates we see in Jerusalem today where are not the same ones as in biblical times.
