The largest stone was found on Dana Point beach in Oceanside, CA.

Oceanside, CA

Oceanside is situated on the Pacific Coast named quite literally because of its location. In 1769 a Spaniard by the name of Portola led an expeditionary force northward from Lower California seeking to establish Franciscan missions throughout California. The Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was founded in 1798. The mission was the largest building in California when completed and was the most prosperous of the all the missions, with its vast fruit orchards and cattle. The mission earned the name “King of the Missions.” Settlers started moving into the area soon afterward but it was still considered “the wild, wild west” until the early 1900s. In 1882 the railroad connected Los Angeles to San Diego. Andrew Jackson Myers applied for a Homestead Grant in 1883 and it officially became a town. Myers is known as the founder of Oceanside as he owned the first land and was said to have built the first house.

Over the years the city of Oceanside has had its ups and downs in popularity. Today it is a thriving beach town in the northern west corner of San Diego County. Oceanside has cooling ocean breezes and a beautiful 7 mile long beach. I found the large stone in this painting as I walked our lovely beach one day. Oceanside also has a large pier and harbor and draws visitors from all over the world. Just north of downtown is Camp Pendleton Marine Base which is the largest military base in our nation.
